There are two types of people in this world – those that make their bed in the morning and those that don’t. Our belief is that those that do tend to live a more productive life. Keeping structure and organization in your day has a number of benefits. But before we discuss the benefits of organizing, let’s first analyze why a mess can lead to so much stress.

How Clutter Affects Stress, Focus, and Well-Being

According to Psychology Today,

  1. Clutter bombards our minds with excessive stimuli (visual, olfactory, tactile), causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren't necessary or important.
  2. Clutter distracts us by drawing our attention away from what our focus should be on.
  3. Clutter makes it more difficult to relax, both physically and mentally.
  4. Clutter constantly signals to our brains that our work is never done.
  5. Clutter makes us anxious because we're never sure what it's going to take to get through to the bottom of the pile.
  6. Clutter creates feelings of guilt ("I should be more organized") and embarrassment, especially when others unexpectedly drop by our homes.
  7. Clutter inhibits creativity and productivity by invading the open spaces that allow most people to think, brainstorm, and problem solve.
  8. Clutter frustrates us by preventing us from locating what we need quickly.

Organization can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, the very point of it is to keep things in order so that life is easier and more calming. Organization can be a very therapeutic practice and its effects are long-lasting if it becomes a regular part of your routine. So what are the benefits of organization?

  1. Organization reduces stress and overwhelm, bringing peace into your home. It gives you a chance to go through that junk pile and rid yourself of everything you don’t need while giving a place to the things you do. Your environment reflects your mood, so if your home is in order, you will feel calm and more settled.
  2. Organization helps you to focus on the tasks at hand and enables you to accomplish them more quickly, allowing you to be more productive.
  3. Organization saves you time to spend doing activities you enjoy. It means no more wasting time looking for things that aren’t in their designated place and more time to do things that bring you joy.
  4. Organization improves sleep. When you have less things to worry about and feel at ease with the state of your home, you fall asleep quicker and have a more restful slumber.
  5. Organization improves confidence & energy. Confidence in your own abilities to accomplish tasks and be productive and the energy you get from seeing the transformation from chaos to order.

Making Organization Enjoyable and Sustainable

Organization can be fun! Put on some of your favorite music, buy some cute and functional storage bins and start small. You can organize with a design in mind, leaning into your creative side.
