We tend to push appointments to “someday,” especially when we feel okay. But the end of the year is actually a great time to catch up, check in, and get ahead. Think of it as a gift to Future You—one that pays off in peace of mind and good planning.

Here’s what to consider before the calendar turns:

1. Use Up Insurance Benefits & FSA Funds

If you have Medicare or other insurance that resets annually, you may have already met your deductible. That makes now a good time to schedule:

• Annual physical or wellness exam

• Eye exams or new glasses

• Hearing tests or hearing aid adjustments

• Routine lab work or screenings

• Preventive procedures your doctor has been gently reminding you about

• Dental visits, cleanings, or repairs

• Any specialist follow-ups you’ve been putting off

Also, if you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), don’t forget: those funds often expire at year’s end. Use them on eligible expenses like prescription glasses, dental work, or over-the-counter items.

2. Check In on Your Medications

• Do you have enough refills to last through the holidays and into the new year?

• Are there medications you no longer need—or new ones you haven’t started yet?

• Do you need to review your medication list with your doctor or pharmacist for possible interactions or duplications?

This is a great time to get organized, toss expired pills, and ask questions about anything that’s been bothering you.

3. Schedule Preventive Screenings

If you’re eligible for mammograms, colonoscopies, bone density scans, or other age-related screenings, the end of the year is a good time to ask: Am I due for anything?

If medical visits feel overwhelming, bring a family member or trusted friend—or jot down your questions beforehand. Having support can help you stay clear, calm, and confident during appointments.
